NRL v NRLCEO Ladder: Rd 7

NRLCEO v NRL Ladder

The round we just had was why this very article was dreamt up in the first place. This week saw half the results change from NRL to NRLCEO.

In the most interesting analysis yet, we look at how and why…

Bulldogs 28 Vs Sea Eagles 16

The Bulldogs are still without their bigger forwards but still able to out-muscle the dismal Manly. WH’s coming only from the expected three in Josh Jackson, Michael Lichaa and Aiden Tolman who all managed the task easily. Playing the Tigers at home next week on the Friday night should see these three repeat their efforts. Good news for those who have held onto Josh Reynolds as he set up three tries and line breaks scoring himself a handy nine points. Curtis Rona is still leading their scoring efforts while  Trent Hodkinson was only able to add the extras to one-third of the tries.

Manly are still running around lost while Jamie Buhrer has found his way again bagging a double. Tom Symonds was allowed to play a full game in the backrow and just snuck through to get a WH with 41. Peter Hiku is the only other player who is able to get any points in this backline and will once again line up at fullback, soon to get the position added to his.

Dragons 12 Vs Broncos 10

The Dragons continue their winning ways on the paddock but lose were it matters –  going down by 10 points in CEO this week. Mike Cooper almost bagged a WH, try double falling short by 7 while Trent Merrin led from the front with 174 meters. Etonia Nabuli continues to impress with another try. Coming up against the Roosters in an ANZAC Day classic this weekend, can this side continue to shut other teams out?

While falling by a conversion in the NRL the Broncos did the majority of the work in this clash. While their superior ability to break the line doesn’t equate to an NRL win they managed to best the Dragons in CEO. Scoring an extra WH doesn’t hurt either with five players receiving that honor. Josh McGuire ran for 141 from 16 carries but fell short of the double this week. Sam Thaiday bagged a WH/ Try this week. Andrew McCullough had a hand in everything this week with a WH, assist, line break assist and 40/20.

Titans 32 Vs Panthers 6

James Roberts has no intention of slowing down and while not picked during the draft in many comps has continued his form getting another try. Luke Douglas outshines Nate Myles once more beating the rep player to a WH. It seems both William Zillman and Josh Hoffman have found their positons getting a double each. Ryan James sneaks in again with 42. Away to the Warriors next week they will have to be on point to outplay the bigger and faster pack.

The Panthers are struggling with injuries at the moment. Nigel Plum is looking a handy replacement doing the hard yards still. Word is Elijah Taylor may have done his ACL once more so look to Tyrone Peachey if he is available, the kid loves a try too. Robert Jennings makes way this week with George Jennings his older bigger brother stepping into the lineup. Mathew Moylan impresses as always but cannot do it alone from the back. At home to the Sharks this week they should be feeling more confident at home.

Cowboys 28 Vs Warriors 24

The Cowboys scored an impressive win over the Warriors, but again lost in CEO. Points only coming from five players with Lachlan Coote scoring 10 points bagging a try and setting two up. Jake Granville managed 18 points with a hat trick and a WH. His WH came bang on 40 though so while its awesome for a hooker to score this many a WH isn’t always going to come. James Tamou got the other WH also only just hitting 40. Geoff Adams highlighted the plight of three other Cowboys finishing on 39 involvements in Workhorse Watch this week.

The Warriors snagged a CEO win with their efforts coming from a wider range of players. Simon Mannering continues his great work effort with 59 involvements, unless he had one more run for 30 meters a double was never on the cards though. Jacob Lillyman nearly averaged 10 meters a run from his 15 and along with 33 tackles had a huge game. Konrad Hurrell scored a try and is being rewarded with a week off, a bold move that I am not happy with as Jonathan Wright keeps his spot with a handy try. Bodene Thompson continues to be a better buy and pick up than Ryan Hoffman who only managed 30 involvements.

Storm 17 Vs Roosters 16

The third of four upsets this week saw the Storm get the two points over the Roosters but outscored in the stats department. Jesse Bromwich continues to be the inform prop and forward of the competition. He managed 53 involvements and 141 meters. Tohu Harris bested him with involvements getting 57 while Cameron Smith beat both with 60 let down only by his meters. Marika Koroibete gets another try and 169 meters to go with it, the kid can run!

The Roosters forwards get the win over the Storm with 2 more WH’s proving the difference. Jake Friend once again had enough for a double but fell short with meters. Dylan Napa makes the most of no JWH with 50, while Sam Moa back this week could diminish his output. Siosiua Teukeiaho while being a mouthful is also a handful getting a WH and 149 meters off 15 runs. Playing the Dragons next week could see a similar involvement from the forwards unless they can be the team to crack them open.

Tigers 22 Vs Raiders 30

Tim Simona stars again for the Tigers but it’s not enough to keep them from giving up a 22 point lead. Pat Richards continues to score but was unable to convert his from the sideline. A pitiful one WH this week coming to none other than Aaron Woods chalking up 210 meters from 20 runs. Robbie Farah fell short by two but managed four points regardless with an assist and two line break assists.

The Tigers letting Blake Austin go was a horrible mistake but Raiders gain as sets up a try on the back of a line break. Getting 500% more WHs this week than their opponents thanks to Iosia Soliola, Paul Vaughn, Jarrad Kennedy, Josh Papalii and Josh Hodgson. Shaun Fensom is back to add to their promising forward stock. Away up in Cairns next week after horrible weather in Canberra would be an unwelcome shock for the Raiders as they take on a Rabbitohs side looking to bounce back.

Knights 22 Vs Eels 28

The Knights forward pack led by Kane Snowden was unable to stand up to the Eels. The Knights wingers in James McManus and Akuila Uate both crossed the line. The experiment of Sione Mata’utia coming on and Kurt Gidley pushing to hooker and getting a WH each week named at fullback could be at an end. That being said this week produced no better results so Stone may have something else in mind. Tariq Sims managed only 29 and is yet to win as a Knight while his brother Korbin Sims went just better at 32. Home to the Cowboys this week the Knights need to find their start of season form and halt the Cowboys from marching on.

The Eels had a great game lead by Nathan Peats bagging a double and a WH scoring 16 points. Danny Wicks hit the WH on the head with 40 and a beautiful try saver in the game to halt the Knights comeback. Tim Mannah managed a WH with 44 this week and 147 meters to go with it. A double to John Folau sees him back in the team of the week with another 10 points. Chris Sandow continues to be the top CEO halfback with an assist and a 40/20, a handy 8 points with the boot too.

Sharks 18 Vs Rabbitohs 10

Sharks should have been without bite missing Paul Gallen and Andrew Fifita, but Jayson Bukuya and Anthony Tupou stepped up getting a WH each and a try to Bukuya. Luke Lewis had 56 involvements and the meters for a double, managed a try though for a total of 8. His form leading into Origin and the ANZAC Test could see him snag a spot for the state and country. Michael Gordon crossed the line before going off prior to half time and not returning. Michael Ennis may have been the difference in the Sharks winning with a great performance on the field, his falling 3 shy of a WH cost the Sharks the CEO win.

Disappointing NRL result for the Rabbitohs saw their tackling efforts rewarded in a CEO win. A massive 7 WH’s this week from a team normally averaging less than a third of that in recent seasons. Top effort from Glenn Stewart with 50 tackles with a 6 on his back. Yes he played in the backrow but with 60 involvements only missed out on a double with meters. Chris McQueen managed a WH/ Try double with 41 involvement. Bryson Goodwin managed his first CEO points of the year with three while his assist went to Alex Johnston who continues to score at more than an average of one a game for his career. George and Thomas Burgess both managed a WH with Tom edging out George for meters with less runs. The trip to Cairns this week should see the Rabbitohs return to form as they have won their last two games up there. Last year resulting in the picture below.

Marcho

Above would be Team Talk with Marcho editor and Moneyball podcast regular Will “Marcho” Marchinton who lost a bet to me when my team beat the pitiful Knights up in cairns last year. Wonder if he is game for a similar bet this year when our sides face off?

The Rabbitohs managed to get their win/lose back the same while the Cowboys lost another CEO game and are nine positions lower on the CEO ladder.

The Bulldogs regain top rung and lead points scored the CEOs while the Sea Eagles are on the opposite end are nearing half the Bulldogs points. The Dragons though are still the top defensive team but play the Roosters who score a lot of their points through their backs, they could be the team to open up the Dragons both in the NRL and CEO.

Once again good luck to everyone this week and have a crack at Moneyball.com.au this week with a huge ANZAC special, first place gets $450 all the way down to 30th spot getting $16.
