Preseason Injury Round-up #3

Our resident rugby league injury expert, the NRL Physio is back with a wrap-up of the injuries and recoveries in the NRL preseason.

Jai Arrow

The Titans lock has suffered two broken ribs at Titans training. It is generally a 2-4 week recovery. Pain tolerance is an issue but also need to allow for healing. There are only two and a half weeks until the NRL season starts and so he is now a chance at missing Round 1.

James Tedesco

The Roosters flyer was housebound and quarantined last week due to contracting mumps. Mumps is rarely dangerous beyond flu-like symptoms/swollen glands so there are still no concerns for Round 1 availability.

Billy Slater

The Melbourne Storm are still confident Billy Slater’s shoulder issue is only minor. He has pulled up well the past few days and won’t get scans at this stage. Great news for the Storm and for those who drafted him.

Greg Inglis

Anthony Seibold seemed to indicate Greg Inglis will be held out until Round 2 or 3 on his return from an ACL reconstruction. This isn’t good news for those who drafted him, but if he wants to see out the season this is a good precaution to take.

Angus Crichton

The nine fingered Rabbitoh has been dealing with an Achilles issue and will likely miss all trial games but should be fit for Round 1 barring any setbacks.

Clint Gutherson

Gutherson’s return from a torn ACL has been pushed back to Round 4 or 5. The extra time in rehab is definitely a benefit for Gutherson, as each month that passes between 6-9 months his chance of ACL re-injury will decrease by 50%.

Jack Bird

The former Shark has begun field training, skills work and upper body weights three months after his shoulder reconstruction surgery. He is planning to start contact in early March and will need at least four weeks after that before return to play. He is aiming for an NRL return in Round 4-5.

Adam Reynolds

Reynolds had not run for the past three weeks, prior to a minor run on Friday and some goal kicking. He is still tracking well for a Round 1 return from plantar fasciitis.

Jacob Liddle

The young Tigers hooker is still recovering from a double shoulder reconstruction in the off-season. He’s “unlikely” to be available Round 1 but will be not far off.

Cody Walker

Walker has been training in rehab group after suffering a shoulder injury two weeks ago. He didn’t play in Rabbitohs first trial, hoping to be fit for Charity Shield.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak

Confirmed high ankle (syndesmosis) sprain last week for DWZ. He is set to miss Round 1 of the NRL with a six week recovery timeline. Likely grade 2 injury.

Other injuries:

  • A confirmed ACL injury for Broncos forward Andre Savelio which is at least 6-9 months recovery. It is likely the end of his season before it started.
  • It is somewhat good news for Darcy Lussick after his ankle injury on the weekend; scans revealed a high ankle (syndesmosis) sprain, but no fracture. He will miss 4-6 weeks with likely grade 2 injury.
  • Titans coach Garth Brennan confirmed that prop Morgan Boyle has suffered a shoulder injury in training but remains hopeful he will be right for Round 1.
  • Dunamis Lui has been given the all clear from his surgeon and returned to footy in the Raiders trial against the Dogs. It is just over eight months return to play for him since an ACL reconstruction last season.
  • Sam Kasiano is expected to miss the Storm’s last trial after an ankle injury in the Knights trial. In good news, it is not a re-aggravation of the ankle injury that kept him out of training in December.
  • Tyrone May is moving well just under five months post ACL reconstruction. Aim has been for NRL return in April (would be seven month return to play), looks like that is on track. Great to see.
