Captains Call: Round 17

Welcome back to another edition of Captains Call.

Before we get into it what a game the Dragons v Knights was. Jason Nightingale scored the first two of the match but not to be out done Nathan Ross scores a hat trick in about 15 minutes. Nightingale scored his hat trick in the second half and it got me thinking, when was the last time a player from both teams scored a hat trick.

Let’s get into it and the biggest disappointment was Tohu Harris, although no fault of his own. A knee injury in the first half when he was already on his way to an easy work horse with 26 involvements, cut his game short.

Elijah Taylor didn’t disappoint with his point scoring streak scoring an easy work horse. Although the Tigers were ordinary, you can never deny Taylors work ethic.

When Matt Moylan set up the first try which looked very easy I thought he’s in for a big day, but that’s where his points ended managing just one try assist and line break assist.

In the same boat was Shaun Johnson with one try assist and a field goal but what is probably the most pleasing thing for Johnson owners is the fact he will be kicking for at least one more week with Luke set to miss time with a shoulder injury.

I called it, I did say to expect Gareth Widdop to come out firing and didn’t he what. Four try assists, three line breaks and two line break assists made sure Widdop hit double digits which made him pick of the bunch.

We have a full round this week thankfully.

Time to review five more and don’t forget to vote or leave a comment below.

Angus Crichton (safe bet)

This bloke has been on fire and I think the week off would have done him wonders as a youngster finding his way in the top grade. The scary thing is he is only going to get better. Last game against the Panthers he managed an easy workhorse and picked up a try assist and line break as well.

Andrew Fifita (safe bet)

Fifita has been in good workhorse form this year only missing on two occasions. He comes up against a good Roosters outfit and after the Sharks lost last week I think he will be in for a good show. The battle of the forwards will be a good one too watch, he may just get the minutes to get close to a double.

Nathan Ross (risk and reward)

After scoring a hat trick last week you could forgive Ross for having a quiet one this week, but against the Tigers, I don’t think so. If Knights play that fast football against the Tigers I can see Ross-dog scoring more points this week.

James Tedesco (risk and reward)

For Tedesco the big risk is if he plays. If he does and coming up against the Knights, it could just be the game to kick start his point scoring for the rest of the year. Only two tries this year, expect that to increase this week.

Clint Gutherson (risk and reward)

Hasn’t Gutherson been the surprise packet of the year? Averaging over six points a game for the last four games Gutherson has been in fine form. With the spine getting back together and playing fullback he could be in for another big week.

Who are you picking as captain for Round 17?
