NRL Physio Injury Updates: Rep Round

Our resident rugby league injury expert, the NRL Physio has written a wrap-up of the injuries and recoveries after the representative round.

Wade Graham

The Sharks co-captain had surgery last week to insert a plate for a broken cheekbone. The Sharks think this occurred sometime during their Round 15 game against Brisbane. Most require 3-6 weeks recovery and Graham is hopeful of returning in Round 18.

Jordan Rapana

The Raiders flyer is expected to be out until Round 23 with a high grade hamstring tear. That effectively rules his NRLCEO season out.

Michael Morgan

As reported by @Tuxy81 on Twitter, the Australian rep underwent surgery on his torn bicep during the week. Unfortunately he won’t play again this year.

Viliame Kikau

The giant Panthers back rower is progressing very well with rehab from a minor MCL sprain. He is looking good to return this weekend.

Dylan Napa

The Queensland hard man suffered a hand injury during Origin (no word on severity) but his ankle pulled up fine‬.

Ryan Matterson

The Roosters youngster was still suffering mild concussion symptoms last week, but has reportedly recovered well from minor wrist surgery. He has not been named this week and his availability week to week will likely remain a fluid situation as treatment continues for his concussion symptoms.

Nene Macdonald

The PNG representative suffered a “minor tear to one of the muscles around his shoulder” and is expected to be fit to play in Round 16 this weekend.

Akuila Uate

Another syndesmosis injury ending a season with Akuila Uate ruled out after suffering the injury representing Fiji this past weekend. With that recovery time frame he will also likely require surgery.

Mitch Pearce

The Knights half is edging closer to making his return from torn pectoral muscle after successfully completing two weeks of contact worth with the training staff, he took part in the team’s field session for the first time on Monday.

Kieran Foran

The Dogs star signing will undergo reconstruction surgery for the ligaments of his injured toe and will be out for the rest of the season. He will be in a moon boot for six weeks and often full recovery will be 3 months or more. I wish him the best with surgery and rehabilitation.

Mahe Fonua

Confirmed broken forearm for Mahe Fonua which requires surgery. This likely means at least 6-10 weeks recovery, which is very unfortunate for him.

‪Moses Suli

The Sea Eagles centre has been cleared of sternum fracture and is a good chance to play this week (possibly with pain relief)‬.

Sam Kasiano

Unfortunate news for Big Sam who has ruptured his PCL and is expected to miss 8-10 weeks. NRL players can commonly play without a PCL in their knee after completing a thorough rehab program.

Jack Williams

The ‪Sharks young gun is out for the season after pec rupture last weekend. Usually requires 10-14 weeks recovery and therefore we won’t see him again this season.

Other injuries:‬

  • ‪Manu Ma’u (cheekbone/eye socket) and Raymond Faitala-Mariner (hand) both suffered fractures on the weekend, no word yet on expected recovery times‬.
  • Luke Lewis is expected to miss 4 weeks with a minor calf strain.
  • Braidon Burns picked up a meniscal tear a few weeks ago, had surgery to trim it back and is hoping to return next few weeks.
  • Richie Kennar is back out of boot, but is still 4-6 weeks away from returning.
  • Junior Paulo is expected back this week from Lisfranc injury.
  • Luke Bateman will miss four weeks after minor knee surgery over the bye.
  • Ata Hingano’s syndesmosis injury will unfortunately require surgery and he is expected to miss the rest of the season. Most require 8-12 weeks recovery and often longer if a fracture is present.
  • Unfortunately Max King will require shoulder reconstruction surgery after dislocating his shoulder two weeks ago. A usual 4-6 month recovery will have him fit sometime during the pre-season.
