NRL Physio Injury Updates: Round 14

Our resident rugby league injury expert, the NRL Physio has written a wrap-up of the injuries and recoveries after Round 14.

Peter Wallace

Peter Wallace has retired effective immediately. He revealed he has played the past two years without an ACL in his knee after his latest ACL reconstruction failed. He has recently been dealing with a bicep tendon injury. When Peter Wallace went for precautionary scans on his knee last year he was told not only was he playing without an ACL, calcification suggested it had been ruptured for 12 months. Playing NRL for a year without knowing he had an ACL injury and for two years total is some effort. I wish him the very best as he moves into a coaching role.

Jordan Rapana

Unfortunately almost worst case scenario for the Kiwi international, as he has torn his hamstring (sounds like grade 3 tear) and will miss at least eight weeks of footy. He will be reassessed next week after his injury settles. Most high grade hamstring injuries require 8-12 weeks recovery.

Api Koroisau

Unfortunately it is the worst case scenario for Api Koroisau. Scans revealed he has a broken foot and he is expected to miss 8-10 weeks. Some bones in the foot are notoriously slow healers due to poor blood supply.

Josh Hodgson

The English hooker has been named to return for the Raiders this weekend. This will be six months and one week since his ACL reconstruction surgery late last year. I wish him the best for his return.

Jamie Buhrer

It is a suspected ACL injury for Jamie Buhrer, which is horrible to hear. This is likely requiring surgery, means his season is over and more than seven months recovery ahead. I wish him the very best in his recovery.

Jesse Bromwich

The Kiwi Storm forward will miss 4-6 weeks as a result of a grade two hamstring tear suffered in Sunday’s win over Brisbane.

Viliame Kikau

Positive news for Viliame Kikau as scans confirmed a grade 1 MCL sprain. He is expected to require 1-3 weeks recovery and could potentially return in Round 16 after the representative bye round.

Daniel Saifiti

The big Knights twin has a Lisfranc (midfoot) injury with a 4-6 week recovery expected.

If you have Foxtel, check out Andrew Voss’s show “The Fan” Tuesday’s at 7.30pm. I will be making an appearance every couple of weeks to talk through some common injuries that occur in the NRL.
