NRL Physio Injury Updates: Round 16

Our resident rugby league injury expert, the NRL Physio has written a wrap-up of the injuries and recoveries after the representative round.

Greg Inglis

The Rabbitohs and Maroons captain is to have surgery on his broken thumb. He is expected to miss six weeks of footy. Surgery can often help speed up return to play which is why the Rabbitohs and Inglis have chosen this path.

Tohu Harris

I’ve had dozens of NRLCEOs asking me about Tohu Harris on Twitter. He suffered a meniscus tear this past weekend and will have athroscopic surgery and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. The usual return range for this type of injury is in the 3-6 weeks range. Jamie Buhrer recently returned from a meniscus tear that required surgery and missed only two weeks of footy. Shows that recovery can sometimes be accelerated in these cases.

Kalyn Ponga

The man of the moment is out for three to four weeks with a Grade 1 hamstring tear. This means that he will miss Game 3 of State of Origin and 2-3 Knights games. I’m sure there will be plenty of news coming as he gets closer to returning.

Dylan Napa

It is a confirmed low grade MCL sprain for Dylan Napa and he will be monitored throughout the week regarding his availability for Origin 3. This sort of injury usually requires 1-3 weeks recovery.

Slade Griffin

Feeling for Slade Griffin who suffered an ACL/LCL rupture and lateral meniscus tear, which will require surgery and 9-12 months recovery. He has already come back from three ACL injuries in his career but this will be a long road ahead of him.

Viliame Kikau

Great news for Kikau and the Panthers as he only suffered minor bone bruising with no MCL injury/fracture. It will be a pain tolerance/function issue and he is a good chance to play this week but how it settles over the next 2-3 days very important.

Beau Scott

The former NSW representative, Shark, Dragon, Knight and now Eel announced his retirement last week after suffering an ACL injury earlier this season. It is always sad to see an injury forced retirement. I wish him the very best with what comes next for him.

If you have Foxtel, check out Andrew Voss’s show “The Fan” Tuesday’s at 7.30pm. I will be making an appearance every couple of weeks to talk through some common injuries that occur in the NRL.
