Billy Slater

The Storm are considering resting Billy Slater from Round 1 in two weeks time if he shows signs of lingering soreness with his shoulder injury. The good news is the scans came back clear, but it was a fairly significant blow to the shoulder joint. The stiffness and pain can take time to settle.

Greg Inglis

Inglis made a shock appearance in the weekend’s Charity Shield despite not being named in the team. Inglis enjoyed a 19-minute cameo in the Charity Shield in was his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last year in round one.

Alex Johnston

After being crunched by Dragons recruit James Graham in the first half, Johnston failed to return to the field and was seen receiving treatment from Rabbitohs staff in the sheds on his ribs. Video suggests more cartilage injury for Alex Johnston rather than fracture. If confirmed can be anywhere from 1-6 weeks, but mostly pain tolerance issue which pain killing injections can help. Rabbitohs fans will be familiar with this injury as Sam Burgess played with one late last year.

Dylan Walker

The Sea Eagles centre is aiming for a return in Round 5, which would be six and a half months since dislocating his ankle and fracturing his fibula. He began agility training this week, and is handling straight line running well. Provided there are no setbacks a Round 5 return is very achievable.

Connor Watson

The Knights recruit is dealing with an articular cartilage issue in his ankle, which can restrict his range of movement and cause catching pain. It has been present for the past 18 months but has improved recently. Watson will continue to manage it throughout the season.

Jacob Liddle

In his rehab from a shoulder reconstruction Jacob Liddle has begun weight training, but no contact work yet. Usually at least 3-4 weeks after contact training before return to play, so appears likely he will miss the first few rounds of the NRL season.

Nathaniel Roache

The Warriors back up hooker’s season is in doubt due to achilles injury and is having scans to determine extent of injury. It will be absolutely devastating if he has ruptured his achilles again after he suffered an achilles rupture in August last year. Manual testing for achilles rupture is very accurate, so it is not looking good. It would be a 5-9 month recovery if confirmed so fingers crossed for him.

Cameron Murray

The young Rabbitohs that has been high demand in NRLCEO saw him miss the Charity Shield this weekend although it is said to be minor. The Rabbitohs expect him to be fit for Round 1 at this stage.

Gerard Beale

The Warriors outside back is penciled in to return in Round 4 from a broken leg suffered in the Rugby League World Cup. He has resume full training and now just needs to build up fitness.

Matt Scott

It’s great to see the Cowboys co-captain changing direction at speed off his right leg already. It is the same leg he ruptured his ACL in almost 12 months ago.

Jahrome Hughes

It has been confirmed from the Storm medical staff that Hughes has a subluxed (minor dislocation, popped back in) shoulder for Jahrome Hughes. General guide to treatment options:

  • Conservative (no surgery, likely if minimal structural damage/stable shoulder): 3-6 weeks, can still require surgery if unstable
  • Surgery (significant damage/unstable shoulder): 3-6 months

Kane Linnett

Unfortunately Kane Linnett suffered a very typical pec tear injury mechanism. As he came off said he “felt something in his pec”. If it is torn he would need surgery and 10+ weeks recovery. Fingers crossed it’s only minor.

Campbell Graham

Souths outside back Campbell Graham suffered a small fracture in his hand last week. Thankfully the fracture is only minor in nature, and he is only expected to miss 2-4 weeks of footy.

Kyle Flanagan

The young Sharks half suffered a broken thumb in the Sharks trial last weekend and is now in a splint. It is usually a 4-6 week recovery, looking at a return in Round 3-4.

Other injuries

  • Josh Dugan hurt his jaw but is fine to play the next game
  • Matt Moylan had some fluid in his knees but won’t miss any footy
  • Matt Eisenhuth suffered concussion and is expected to be ok for selection in Round 1 of the NRL
  • Jesse Bromwich missed their trial due to a virus but will be ok for Round 1
  • Braden Uele is off for scans on his ribs
  • Ava Seumanufagai is off for scans on his hamstring
