Trade Doctor: Dugan for Robinson

Question:  Should I trade Josh Dugan for Reece Robinson?

Reece Robinson and Josh Dugan have both experiences stints as Canberra Raiders fullback.  One was shifted to the wing for poor form and the other was shifted to the Dragons as he has no form: but which one will make your NRLCEO team better?  Let’s take a deeper look.

They'd really rather be together...

Does anyone else remember how amazing Reece Robinson was for NRLCEO coaches in 2012?  When Dugan went down with injury/being a tosser/whatever it was that season, Reece Robinson stepped in and was freak.  He essentially played a 9 game stint like he was Brett Stewart, setting up tries, scoring them himself and giving plenty of reason to expect big things in 2013.  When 2013 itself rolled around, Reece Robinson adopted an NRLCEO playing style more like Sam Perrett; scoring bugger-all per game on his way to a 2.36ppg average.

Josh Dugan is a player the Doctor has looked into previously.  Below is an amended version of my thoughts on him:

Josh Dugan scarred the Doctors memory after captaining an opponent to victory in 2013.  The Doctor thought Dugan was an NRLCEO star coming into this article, but boy oh boy do the numbers show otherwise.  Dugan averaged just under 3.5 points a game in a limited 11 appearances in 2013, and the numbers only get more interesting.  Of the 37 points Dugan scored, 32 came in 3 games.  That leaves just 5 points between the other 8 fixtures he played.

Dugan has match-winning potential and can explode to win a match for your side; however he lacks consistent week-to-week numbers.  If you have a side losing by 8+ points each week, Dugan might be a guy you look to as a boom or bust player.  Just be prepared for a lot more ‘bust’ than ‘boom’.

The way i see this trade, a lot of this comes down to your squad.  I am stuck in a 22 player-per-squad league with only 3 wingers, and 2 of them at the start of the week were David Williams and David Simmons.  In that situation, with Brett “It only takes me 2.5 games to lead the league in try assists” Stewart as my incumbent fullback, I’d love a Reece Robinson type.  The flexibility is great, and even a down on form winger will occasionally get stuck in front of an unguarded tryline with no way to stuff it up.

Dugan is the better player; the numbers make that clear.  The downside to that is he is also the incumbent origin fullback and could miss 3 or more games in the next couple of months.  An extra point per game mightn’t seem like a lot, but I’ve won two matches this year by a single point.

Trade Verdict:  If I am picking a player to start at fullback, I think Dugan is worth more points this year and the best choice.  If I am picking a player to primarily be a backup, I take Robinson every time.  He covers 3 positions as opposed to 1 and won’t let you down with possible rep selection.
