Workhorse Watch Round 13
Workhorse Watch 2023!
Round 13 was a shortened Round with only 5 matches being played but that does not mean you can take the weekend off. There were plenty of players still in action and with players potentially resting from Origin over the next few weeks, now is the time to pay attention to the stats. There were 48 players who scored a WH in Round 13, with 2 DWH’s this week.
WORKING HARD
J’maine Hopgood (Eels)
43 tackles, 19 runs for 167m in 80 minutes – DWH (0.78 stats per minute)
Hopgood returns with his 3rd DWH of the season. Cannot speak highly of this guy in terms of CEO performance, he will rocket into a 2nd round draft pick in most comps next season, although there may be a CEO brave enough to take him late in the 1st round as he is a fantastic option for Captain.
Joseph Tapine (Raiders)
43 tackles, 17 runs for 206m in 68 minutes – DWH (0.88 spm)
Joe salutes for his first DWH of the season, interestingly in a match he was named at lock. He has been named at lock again for Round 14 so this could be a permanent switch for him. This could mean a slight increase in his minutes which is perfect for his CEO scoring. He also notched a DME to go with his DWH.
Phoenix Crossland (Knights)
52 tackles, 4 runs for 24m in 80 minutes – WH (0.70 spm)
Phoenix played the full 80 on the weekend and he was a tackling machine. For those CEO’s who have lost a hooker to injury or loss of form, he could get you a WH most weeks for the rest of the year. His workload in defence has caused his attacking stats to vanish. A good back up or bench option for mine.
Jacob Liddle (Dragons)
51 tackles, 4 runs for 87m in 73 minutes – WH (0.75 spm)
I could never understand why Griffin continued to play Mbye when you have a young, somewhat seasoned Hooker, sitting in your squad. Although the Dragons are still struggling, they looked better with Liddle on the field from the start. I think he is good enough to be your starting CEO Hooker, I just don’t like the team he is playing for.
HARDLY WORKING
Leo Thompson (Knights)
24 tackles, 12 runs for 99m in 40 minutes (0.90 spm)
Thompson owners will be lamenting his drop in minutes over recent weeks. He has now gone 4 weeks without a WH after his powerful start to the year off the back of a lot of injuries in the Knights forwards. I think he is a drop for those CEOs with a limited squad size.
Jacob Host (Rabbitohs)
24 tackles, 8 runs for 70m in 59 minutes (0.54 spm)
For a starting back rower he really struggles for involvement. Host has not been able to make a significant impact since getting a start due to injuries, with only two WH’s for the year. He seems like he has the potential but he never really delivers.
SPUD POOL LOOKOUT
Jake Granville (Cowboys)
44 tackles, 9 runs for 79m in 56 minutes – WH (0.94 spm)
Although his time in the starting lineup may be up, Granville could still prove useful during the Origin period. He has a strong work ethic and the ability to break the line and create a try. He is also now a dual Hooker/Lock position which is very handy.
Toby Rudolf (Sharks)
DNP
The Sharks big man is due back in the next couple of weeks and I have personally seen him sitting in a few spud pools. A small amount of risk given his long layoff with a foot injury, but it is a risk worth taking if you can afford the roster spot.
Pasami Saulo (Raiders)
33 tackles, 9 runs for 91m in 53 minutes – WH (0.79 spm)
Another player who may not be in the starting lineup for too long, but sometimes picking up a player for a couple of weeks can make all the difference. Only just managed a WH but did so at a decent work rate. Will probably go unnoticed by many so he would be an easy pickup for a few weeks.
Wiremu Greig (Eels)
30 tackles, 15 runs for 143m in 47 minutes – WH (0.96 spm)
What a performance by Greig against the Cowboys. In only 47 minutes he managed a WH and only just fell short of a ME, but it was the way he went about his work that was worth noting. He has the potential to become a quality CEO front rower, so for those in keeper leagues, I would be locking him in for the long term if you can.
WORTH MENTIONING….
Keaon Koloamatangi (Rabbitohs)
30 tackles, 16 runs for 155m in 80 minutes – WH (0.87 spm)
Keaon returned from injury in a big way on the weekend. He got a WH and a ME in a solid performance, just in time for those CEOs holding him whilst he was injured. He could come into Origin contention for games 2 and 3.
Makahesi Makatoa (Eels)
32 tackles, 12 runs for 90m in 53 minutes – WH (0.93 spm)
I know his impact off the bench is important to the Eels, but surely he has earned a start soon. I love his aggressive running and strong defence. With injuries to Lane, Matterson and RCG, Makatoa could handle and edge or the middle and would instantly become CEO relevant.
Josh Papalii (Raiders)
31 tackles, 18 runs for 207m in 54 minutes – WH (0.91 spm)
It was a vintage performance from Papalii and his effort to start the match, along with Tapine, was a big reason the Raiders were able to get the win. It was only his 2nd WH in his last 5 matches so I am not convinced that he can maintain this sort of effort each week.
