Workhorse Watch 2023 – Moe Money!
Round 17 saw the Titans provide us with a performance that their former coach was searching for after 3 years and it came the week after his sacking. The Roosters struggles continue as they lose a few more troops. The Cowboys resurgence continues to gain momentum and the Warriors maintain the defensive rage whilst also piling on the points. In Round 17, 50 players scores a WH with 1 player scoring a DWH.
WORKING HARD
Moeaki Fotuaika (Titans)
43 tackles, 20 runs for 196m in 70 minutes – DWH (0.90 stats per minute)
Big Moe is back to his best as he scores his first DWH since Round 17 2020. With Tino earning a rest, Moe played big minutes and he led from the front in their upset win over the Broncos. The Titans bench is very thin so both Tino and Fotuaika will continue to play big minutes for the time being.
Corey Horsburgh (Raiders)
50 tackles, 16 runs for 131m in 69 minutes – WH (0.96 spm)
Big Red is producing his best ever CEO season on the back of a consistent starting role. With Papalii nearing the end of his career, the time is right for Corey to step up and lead the Raiders. CEOs in keeper/contract leagues should be looking to secure him long term.
Cameron Murray (Rabbitohs)
51 tackles, 12 runs for 123m in 64 minutes – WH (0.98 spm)
As solid as Murray is with his WH scoring, he struggles to provide any attacking stats. He has 1 try, 2 TA’s, 2LB’s and 2 LBA’s so far in 2023 and thats in a Rabbitohs team that is ranked 2nd in points scored. A solid effort last week even with time out for a HIA.
Victor Radley (Roosters)
49 tackles, 12 runs for 96m in 71 minutes – WH (0.86 spm)
Victor the Inflictor returned from yet another suspension and produced his usual high work rate. He spent some time on an edge last week due to injuries to their back rowers. I don’t think this will affect his scoring, he will still be involved enough to score a WH.
HARDLY WORKING
Ryan Matterson (Eels)
23 tackles, 14 runs for 131m in 63 minutes (0.59 spm)
I cannot understand why Matterson is not starting at the Eels, especially with Lane being out injured most of the season. Ryan at his best is a hard working, strong running back rower and yet he continues to start from the pine. Perhaps its an attitude thing, or perhaps its Brad Arthur liking his impact off the bench after 20 minutes of a match. Its not good news for CEOs though with Matterson now missing a WH in his last 3 matches.
Ethan Bullemor (Sea Eagles)
25 tackles, 11 runs for 112m in 80 minutes (0.45 spm)
I am so disappointed in this guys efforts over the last month. He had 2 huge weeks in Rounds 11 & 12 and looked to be on his way to a starting role. He then gets a starting role and his numbers actually drop. Perhaps that is a reflection of his career to date, shows a lot of potential but is yet to become a consistent performer.
Bryce Cartwright (Eels)
23 tackles, 13 runs for 105m in 80 minutes (0.45 spm)
Another Eels back rower who should be scoring a WH every week given his minutes. To be fair he is having his best season since 2016 when he was dominating NRLCEO.
SPUD POOL LOOKOUT
Naufahu Whyte (Roosters)
32 tackles, 10 runs for 106m in 54 minutes – WH (0.78 spm)
This nugget has been killing it in NSW Cup, scoring Workhorses and running for over 200m in his last 8 matches. He now has a starting back row spot due to injuries and I think we might see a start of the future emerge over the next few weeks.
Jacob Saifiti (Knights)
37 tackles, 7 runs for 69m in 36 minutes – WH (1.22 spm)
The wrong Saifiti is in the starting side in my opinion. Jacob has scored a WH in 3 of his last 4 matches and has done so with limited minutes.
Pasami Saulo (Raiders)
33 tackles, 11 runs for 94m in 38 minutes – WH (1.16 spm)
An injury to Josh Papalii has opened the door for Saulo to start. He has scored 2 WH’s in the last month and he should see his minutes increase over the next couple of weeks. He could be a handy pickup to help you make a push to the finals.
Luciano Leilua (Cowboys)
31 tackles, 16 runs for 165m in 68 minutes – WH (0.69 spm)
Luciano looks to have got his match fitness back in his best performance of the season since his return to NRL. He has probably already been snapped up in most comps but if he is still available I think he is worth picking up, especially in a Cowboys team that are playing full of confidence at the moment.
WORTH MENTIONING….
Nelson Asofa-Solomona (Storm)
35 tackles, 14 runs for 158m in 75 minutes – WH (0.65 spm)
Have the Storm found themselves a new attacking weapon playing on an edge? NAS is not really known for his consitent WH scoring but I like this move by Craig Bellamy. Even when Eli Katoa returns you could have both playing in the Back Row, both hard ball runners which would add another element to the Storm’s attack.
Jacob Liddle (Dragons)
43 tackles, 4 runs for 30m in 57 minutes – WH (0.82 spm)
Interim Coach Ryan Carr seems to have settled on Liddle as his starting hooker and have Amone or Sullivan come off the bench to relieve him. Liddle’s high work rate, like most hookers, means he doesn’t need to play 80 minutes to score a WH.
Nathan Brown (Roosters)
26 tackles, 10 runs for 92m in 49 minutes – WH (0.73 spm)
It is likely that Brown will not return to his barnstorming days of years past, but he has a starting role now through injury and I think he will get a WH whilst he is there. Brown has looked down on confidence in recent times so perhaps this is the chance he needs to spark a run of form.
