Captains Call: Round 16

Welcome to week 16 of Captains Call.

The pack tightens! That what has happened after the weekends results. With unexpected losses to the Rabbits, Sharks and Raiders, and wins to Panthers and Dragons, its now made it just three wins separate second and eleventh.

The biggest upset was the Dogs beating the Sharks. I was a gritty win by the Bulldogs who scored all their points in the first 20 minutes and were able to hold off an error riddled Sharks. 16 errors from the Sharks, hard to beat anyone with that ball handling. Michael Lichaa looked very good in his return to first grade, using his running game. Two meters short of a double workhorse and didn’t miss a tackle after making 56. Could he oust King when he’s fit to return?

Let’s review the five from last week.

Damien Cook – 8

Dale Finucane – 4

Josh Papalii – 5

Cody Walker – 1

Kalyn Ponga – 0 (DNP)

Kalyn Ponga was a late out.

Cody Walker got the lone line break. The dumping from the Origin team may have hit him harder than people think.

Dale Finucane was a huge workhorse and missed a double by one involvement. He was on the 60 at the end of the game but adjustments brought him down to 59.

Josh Papalii was again the best of the Raiders forwards and made an easy workhorse.

Best of the week was Damien Cook with a double workhorse.

Let’s preview five for this week and being a bye round, picking the right captain is even more important.

Alex Twal

Has not missed a workhorse all season. He has no other point scoring stats to his name except for 14 workhorses, oh and one-meter eater. You know what you’re going to get from Twal, very safe bet.

Angus Crichton

Hasn’t been at his best so was dropped to the bench before kick-off. Played one of his best games for the year playing in the middle of the park. With Cordner out, Crichton should slot straight into the back row.

Blake Lawrie

With a host of forwards out for the Dragons, expect Lawrie to play bigger minutes. Has only missed one workhorse all year and I can’t see his missing this week.

Daniel Tupou

While everyone expects Roosters to struggle because of Origin, they only have two players in it. With the impending return of Keary, the left edge of Keary, Mitchell and Tupou will be back and if Tigers aren’t careful, they could wreak havoc.

Ryan Papenhuyzen

With Munster out, you’d expect Hughes to slot into the halves and Papenhuyzen to start fullback. Against a depleted Dragons, Papenhuyzens speed and agility will be in full show.
