Captains Call: Round 21

Welcome to week 21 of Captains Call

For many of us, this is the last round before finals start. Good luck to all those out there that need a win to make finals.

Talking about teams that needed to win to make finals, I happened to travel down to Melbourne to watch the Storm host the Raiders. What annoyed me the most wasn’t the game, even though the Storm won, they were simply too good. It wasn’t the stadium itself – as I think AAMI Park is a great stadium. It wasn’t even the fact that my wife got one up on me again because of Storms win. It was being told tickets would go on sale at 5:00pm, but then 5:30pm rolls around and we are still waiting. Then we finally get our tickets, go to the gate, mind you there’s a pre-game going on, only to be told the gates don’t open until 6:00pm.

Come on guys, lift your game, no wonder the AFL had 100,000 to it only hours prior. Game day or game night experience, its something the AFL do better than the NRL unfortunately.

Let’s review the six from last week:

  1. Jake Trbojevic – 4
  2. Ryan James – 4
  3. Elliot Whitehead – 4
  4. Matt Eisenhuth – 4
  5. Aiden Guerra – 9
  6. Josh Jackson – 0

Trbojevic, James, Whitehead and Eisenhuth all go their workhorse as usual, although I was worried when Whitehead was named to start at centre but was swapped last minute.

Josh Jackson fell one involvement short of a workhorse, his first miss since Round 10.

Aiden Guerra was the pick of the lot with a workhorse, a try and line break.

Let’s preview six for this week and we’ll look at back line players. Those players with the ability to score big, but also have that chance of scoring a zero. It’s that risk and reward that you may need to win your game to make finals. Don’t forget to vote or leave a comment below.

Robert Jennings

Jennings is the equal leading try scorer with 17. He’s had a great season for Souths and their left edge had proved most fruitful. A tough game awaits against the Storm but South posses the attack to score against them. Under a slight injury cloud so keep an ear out for updates.

Valentine Holmes

Holmes also has 17 tries this season as he now looks like the fullback that many people wanted to see. Since round five he’s been scoring points for fun and against the Sea Eagles this week, it could be very much of the same.

Josh Addo-Carr

Addo-Carr has 15 tries for the season and will look to continue that this week. Souths will prove their toughest opponent for the last few weeks, but he has the tools to cross the line against any opposition.

David Fusitua

Fusitua is also on 15 tries for the season but hasn’t scored in the last four games. Against a shaky Dragons, that streak may come to an end and with the Warriors needing a win, they won’t be holding back. This could be a high scoring affair.

Blake Ferguson

Ferguson sits on 13 tries for the season. The biggest upside to Ferguson is if you have him in a meter eater comp. He has 27-meter eaters for the season, 10 more than the next player. The Roosters form over the last few weeks has been white hot, watch out Cowboys.

Latrell Mitchell

Mitchell has 11 tries for the season and while there are five other players who sit on 11 as well, none of them have scored five tries on the last two weeks like Mitchell. He is one of the best centres in the comp and it wouldn’t surprise me if by this time next year, we are saying he is the best.

Who will you captain in Round 21?
