Captains Call: Round 22

Welcome to Week 22 of Captains Call – Finals Week 1!

As we move into finals for NRLCEO, there are only four weeks left of the NRL regular season.

Now while the top eight seems to be set, the order in which that is made up is far from it. Souths are a game in front in first place and a win this week would almost cement top spot for them. The make up of the rest is unknown as there are only two wins that separate second and eighth spot. Amid all the refereeing controversy, it has been a very close season and while I can’t wait for the NRLCEO finals to kick off, I also can’t wait for the NRL finals series to start. On their day, anyone in that top eight can win it.

Let’s review the six from last week:

  1. Jennings – 0 (DNP)
  2. Holmes – 5
  3. Addo-Carr – 12
  4. Fusitua – 0
  5. Ferguson – 7 (Double Metre Eater as well)
  6. Mitchell – 5

As stated last week, keep an eye out in case Robert Jennings doesn’t play, which he didn’t. He is also out for about four weeks which isn’t ideal for people who have him.

Fusitua also scored zero. He has only scored two points since being back from injury, hopefully he can find that pre-injury form.

Holmes and Mitchell both got a try and line break. They are both the first-choice goal kickers for their club as it looks like Holmes has taken over from Townsend. It’s a massive advantage to have your goal kickers also scoring plenty of tries throughout the year.

Ferguson managed a try, try assist and line break. He also made another double meter eater for those in a meter eater comp, that’s his 10th for the season.

The pick of the week was Addo-Carr with two tries, two line breaks and a try assist.

Running into finals there’s nothing better than seeing these guys continuing their good form. If you’re lucky enough to have one or even two of these players you’d be very happy, you’d be even happier if you had four of them. One of the players in my private comp has R. Jennings, Holmes, Addo-Carr and Ferguson.

Let’s preview five more, and this week we will look at a player from each of the top five teams. Don’t forget to vote or leave a comment below.

Souths – Sam Burgess

We could’ve said Cook, but we know he’s a given. Slammin Sam has been in some decent form of late, averaging a touch over five points a game. Against an in-form Roosters side, he will want to assert his dominance and could be in for a huge game.

Storm – Felise Kaufusi

Not a huge season from Kaufusi but very consistent averaging close to six points a game for the last three weeks. Coming up against the sharks a workhorse should be easy, he may even add an attacking stat as the Storm look to bounce back after last weeks loss.

Roosters – Jake Friend

Friend has been in some good form of late, averaging six points a game for the last five weeks. A top of the table clash should bring out the best in Friend as he comes up against the inform hooker of the competition.

Dragons – James Graham

Now while his workhorse stats have been down since leaving the Bulldogs, the absence of Vaughan should mean Graham will likely play bigger minutes and may even push for that first double since round seven last year.

Panthers – Tyrone Peachey

Peachey has been in some great form of late, posting scores of 6, 4 and 16. He looks like a real attacking weapon at fullback and up against the Titans who leak more points than the Raiders, he could be in for another big game.
