Captains Call: Round 6

Welcome to week six of Captains Call.

Week six saw some great tries, most notably the try for Matt Ikuvalu, some great finishes to games, Titans vs Panthers and Broncos vs Tigers and some big hits, Sia Soliola’s hit on Jaeman Salmon comes to mind. B

ut will all the highlights, there will also be some low lights. Addin Fonua-Bake, the way he carried himself after getting sin binned was the way a teenager acts who has no discipline, grow up!

The thing I hate to see the most are the injuries, especially the injures that will affect the player long term. In recent memory there have been horrific ones, shattered jaws, completely blown out knees to the worst case that I’ve seen in Alex McKinnon being paralysed.

There have also been deaths on a footy field due to injury.

Will all that has happened on a footy field, why did it take a penalty to the opposition for the Cowboys v Storm to be stopped when a player had a hyper-extended elbow and the other a severely dislocated fracture of the ankle? Not a good look. Also felt for Aidan Guerra who suffered the same fate as Nene McDonald. Wishing both players a speedy recovery.

Congratulations to Greg Inglis on an amazing career. In his prime, the best and most feared centre in the game. Was a pleasure watching him play, even though he would always dominate my team. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Let’s review the five-from last week:

  1. Bateman – 4
  2. Vaughan – 0 (me)
  3. Klemmer – 4
  4. Ferguson – 0
  5. Ponga – 4 (me)

Paul Vaughan and Blake Ferguson both scored a zero although both did come off for injury. Unfortunately, that can happen to even the best of players. Vaughan did make a meter eater though if you use that in your comp.

John Bateman and David Klemmer both notched up a workhorse. Klemmer made it easy but Bateman made exactly 40. That can happen when a team has so much more of the ball, they don’t always make the amount of tackles needed.

Best of the week and only because he got a meter eater was Kalyn Ponga. A try assist and two-line breaks to go with his meter eater made him pick of the week.

Let’s preview five more and don’t forget to vote or leave a comment below.

Kenny Bromwich

Bromwich has relished the chance to start on the edge in place of Stimson, averaging 44 involvements a game. He hasn’t missed a workhorse besides his first game, but hasn’t picked up any attacking stats. Against the Roosters he will be in for a lot of work so his involvements will be high again.

Alex Twal

Twal is pushing that double workhorse mark. He had enough involvements against the Tigers, just didn’t have the meters. He played the full 40 in the first and notched his work horse in that time. Great stats per minute, just needs more runs.

James Fisher-Harris

Fisher-Harris has been the one constant in an under performing team. Starting the season on the edge where he’s not quite as effective, he has since been moved to lock where he is most suited. Made a double workhorse first week back at lock and pick up a work horse, try, try assist, line break and line break assist in his second game back. He is in some form.

Cody Walker

Walker has been in good form this season and went up a notch on the weekend scoring four tries. If the Bulldogs are careful, Souths will do to them what the Dragons did and I fear if it all clicks for Souths, it could be an even bigger score line.

Clint Gutherson

Gutherson has been in great form this season and has amassed 26 points (not including meter eaters). He will be disappointed to have only scored one point on the weekend (plus a meter eater) and will be out against the Tigers to improve on that 26. He is an ultra-competitor and he could be in for a huge game.
