Captains Call: Round 9

Welcome to week nine of Captains Call.

The injury curse strikes again. As it stands, there are roughly 46 players that are injured that would make their respective teams starting 17. Almost three per team, it makes your terminations even more valuable as the season progresses. It wouldn’t be ideal to have used them all already as the players continually drop like flies.

Have Storm lost their aura? Its very tough to say they have, they came back from 20 to nil down to almost beat the reining premiers only a few weeks ago but then they produce the game they did against a very depleted Sharks. Come seasons end I wouldn’t be surprised if they were outside the top four. It’s hard to sustain the level they have been at for so long, they are due for a fall. I’m going out on a limb here and saying once Cameron Smith retires, the Storm will miss the finals all together the following year.

Let’s review the five from last week:

Reed Mahoney – 9

Blake Lawrie – 4

Kyle Feldt – 0 (DNP)

Danny Levi – 1

Cameron Smith – 4

Kyle Feldt didn’t play but surely he mustn’t be far off, the Cowboys need him.

Danny Levi wasn’t even close to a workhorse. He shared some of the hooking duties with Kurt Mann again which personally don’t like, Levi is good enough to play 80. And it was a high scoring game which meant there was only six workhorses for the game and only two to Knights players. Levi did manage a line break assist though.

Blake Lawrie and Cameron Smith both made a workhorse with Lawrie missing a double by one involvement. Smith only had one run which was well down from his previous two games where he had 10 and 15 respectively.

The best of the week was Reed Mahoney. A workhorse, try and line break are a great return for a hooker who is currently ranked second for hookers points wise at the moment. Currently averaging seven a game.

Let’s preview five for this week and don’t forget to vote of leave a comment below.

James Tamou

The captain and the leader of the Panthers pack has been standing strong. Has only missed one workhorse for the year but has crossed the stripe for a couple of tries. With injuries to both Kikau and Yeo, expect Tamou to take on even more responsibility.

David Klemmer

Klemmer has been in great workhorse form. He is eight from eight in that department although coaches who have him might want to see him cross the line and this weekend might just be it against the bottom team.

Isaiah Papali’i

His team might be struggling but when starting, Papali’i makes a workhorse quite easily. He has only crossed for one try this season, expect him to be trying to find a hole in the defence and cross for his second. New to the team, Nikorima will provide the ball to do it.

Maika Sivo

A relative unknown to start the year, Sivo is now making that wing spot his own. Six tries for the year, including four in the last three games make him equal third leading try scorer. Will be a tough ask against the Storm but in anyone can get over the top of Addo-Carr, its Sivo.

Ben Hunt

With no Norman, expect Hunt to be more dominant. Up against a team badly out of form, Hunt, behind that forward pack could really dominate and put on a show like he did in round five.
