NRL v NRLCEO Ladder: Round 1

NRLCEO v NRL Ladder

Ever wondered how your team would go if chucked into NRLCEO format?

The guys behind the site took a huge step in that direction this year creating the Supporter League competition. Sixteen fans were given the reigns over their teams and tasked with picking six to keep, the rest discarded into the draft pool.

The draw was set out like the NRL and as the Souths fan I’m quite happy with the round one results notching 60 points to the Broncos (Mig’s team) lame 28. Ouch buddy…

So why not take this further and see what happens if you were to have your team 1-17 as they take the field vs their opposition.

Full points for all 17 positions and anyone can kick.

How would your team stack up at the end of the year?

We”ll be tracking it all year to find out.

NRL: Broncos (6) v Rabbitohs (36)

While this score line doesn’t surprise anyone the breakdown may be a worry for some.

Two workhorse total is a worry for anyone hoping to get value from either forward pack. Just Brisbane heat? Slow start after heavy offseason? Or is Wayne trying to destroy yet another workhorse pack and grind the fans into boredom?

Whichever the reason I wouldn’t expect these stats to last with Gillett named to start and the Broncos defence not normally operating like a glorified turnstile. Still heaps of positives for the Souths backline with 7 linebreaks against a team touted to be a benchmark this year.

Milford MIA, drop the dead weight.

NRL: Eels (42) vs Sea Eagles (12)

Great start to the year for Eels fans everywhere worrying about the departure of their main man Hayne.

Whilst no replacement, Will Hoppa was able to provide some comfort for fans from the back with solid work around the park.

Again light on WH’s this game, but two Eels expected to notch up plenty of points in that department Watmough and Moeroa both had short stints on the sideline with injuries so don’t panic yet. However Peats sharing the hooking role is a serious cause for alarm. It worked so well in sparking the attack I can’t see this experiment being a one off, 21 involvements in 51 minutes is a worry.

Manly look in for a low scoring season. Foran to Eels, DCE to Titans… who knows how Toovey will play them in the coming season.

NRL: Knights (24) vs Warriors (14)

This game produced a round high of 9 WH tries.

Two of the knights 5 WH’s came from the bench with a solid rotation seeing the forwards heavily involved. Thank god Wayne has moved on and the Knights are allowed to play some decent footy.

Expect good things from their backs this year moving off quick play and offloads, that is if Stone grows a pair and says goodbye to Gidley for good, Kingston was club captain from NSW Cup… time to follow suit with Gidley.

Keep an eye on the Warriors bench props as their involvements and runs were huge, if a little added game time or a starting role they can produce the goods. Unfortunately it looks like Nathan Friend has been put out to pasture so don’t hold your breath, his involvements this week were strengthened by a blood bin and concussion test to Thomas Leuluai.

NRL: Titans (18) vs Tigers (19)

Almost a brilliant upset considering the titans are without 5 starting players.

Ryan James finally looks the goods and if he hadn’t of been sent would have been a shoe in for a WH. Luke Douglas is really benefiting from their diminished forward stock due to the drug scandal and off season retirements.

Pat Richards looks damaging at the beginning of the season once again but did the same last year only to fall of the map, trade at your own caution. Taupau should gain a backrow spot after the next two weeks so if you were fortunate enough to draft him hold on his stock is about to increase.

NRL: Cowboys (4) vs Roosters (28)

Cowboys forward put in the effort this week but couldn’t produce the goods in the backs. Their only backrower not to snag a WH being Jason Taumalolo whose expected to be a rising star after knocking back huge money to move elsewhere.

Cordner had a superb CEO game despite falling 5 short, don’t read into this too much as he is a solid WH and just chalk this up to the exhaustion of running for 148 metres. Look for a great forward battle next week vs Souths which is sure to increase the combined total of both teams 2 WH’s. May be a quieter night for the backs though who again were outstanding for the Roosters (hurts to admit).

NRL: Panthers (24) vs Bulldogs (18)

The only upset of the week concering CEO vs NRL. The Bulldogs were able to beat the Panthers in CEO while falling to them on the park.

While they only won by 3 it’s still a great effort considering this wasn’t the closest NRL game of the round. Questions over new hooker Lichaa have been somewhat answered with him scrapping over the line at 40 involvements. Quiet night for the Dogs forward pack though with Graham and Tolman down from their usual heroics. Chalk this up to a start of season aberration. Jackson however being named in the NRLCEO team of the year in 2014 failed to impress but give him time.

James Segeyaro played 80 minutes and while he scored well failed to reach a WH by 7… Not a great start considering many expect Koroisau to snag the 14 jersey during the season at some stage after winning the NRL last year as hooker.

NRL: Sharks (20) vs Raiders (24)

Very even game on and off the park.

Fensom again is a bankable captain if your comp is that way inclined, not running close to enough for a double but he has been known to sneak in 2 or 3 a season. Great first performance from Iosia Soliola hot on the heels of Fensom only 4 involvements behind with an extra 11 meters. Wighton looks great in the number 1 if he can keep his temper under wraps. The Raiders could surprise a few CEO’s this year with a solid win away from home, unlike the raiders of old they were able to cross the line. Too bad Ricky will do something to fuck this up so be cautious.

While not the most entertaining game of the round there appears to be real value in the Melbourne team this year. Finucane got his wish of increased minutes playing the full 80 and shitting in a WH, as did Harris and Bromwich. Smith as always does the unexpected coming back from injury early to produce a great effort and guide his team to victory.

Mary, mate what are you doing playing Merrin off the bench? Honestly unless there is an injury or two this may be a regular occurrence, Merrin did his best to try sneak in a WH falling 3 short. Frizell and De Belin did well in his absence picking up the load of the once sure thing Merrin. Mary don’t throw away your season to spite this young bloke. You”re just hurting my team  😛

Not much of a shuffle with the tables with a few switching positions. Again the big winners of CEO are the Bulldogs who out play the Panthers moving from 11th to 8th.

This is just round one but expect the tables to reflect the defensive efforts of teams more highly in the coming weeks.

If you have to pick between to backs and are unsure, maybe steer clear of the player who are up against Souths at this point, especially this week with them favorites against the Roosters.

The for and against in the coming weeks should show you which teams your players should be wary of playing but as for now it’s early days so best of luck.

Go Souths!
