Captains Call: Round 6

Welcome to Captains Call for round six.

I told you not to crucify me just yet because as you can see I nailed it last week getting four out of five.

The only bust was James Roberts but after picking up an injury and playing in a game where it looked like they were playing in a shallow pool it was always going to be hard for him to score any points. Gallen got his workhorse as did McInnes with a line break on top. I did say Holmes was due some points and he didn’t disappoint. A try, try assist and two line breaks is a very good return if you named him as captain.

The best for this week goes to Shaun Johnson with a try, a massive three try assists and a line break giving him a huge 14 points, add to that his four goals and you have a very impressive 34 points if you named his as your captain.

On a side note it’s very frustrating when I pick these players and they are the ones to come bite me in the butt. In my private competition, even though we don’t use captains, my opponent for this week had Gallen, McInnes, Johnson and Holmes, those four players combined for 39 points, my team managed 47, as you can see I was dominated.

Time to review five more for the week.

Jarrod Wallace (safe bet)

It was tipped that Wallace would start front row for Titans after his move from the Broncos, what wasn’t a sure thing was how his work horse rate would go but after five rounds he is one of the last remaining players that have managed a work horse every week, even picked up a double first round. With a depleted Titans team, I can see his average of 65 minutes a game continuing.

Elliot Whitehead (safe bet)

When playing in the second row Whitehead is a pretty safe bet. Two games this year in the back row has seen his score 14 points. Even in high scoring games he still manages to get a workhorse where many don’t. Against a depleted Titans side and being on the same edge as Leipana he could be in for more points than just a work horse.

Johnathon Thurston (risk and reward)

Thurston hasn’t scored too many points so far this season besides his goal kicking, that’s due to change this week. Cowboys are playing Tigers and even though Ivan Cleary has taken over as coach I can’t see instant success for the Tigers. If their defence is a fickle as it was against the Raiders and lesser extent Storm, I can see Thurston racking up the try assists and maybe even cross the line himself.

Coen Hess (risk and reward)

The Hess express is the leading try scorer for Cowboys. Top that off with his ability to score a work horse now that it looks like he is starting he could be in for a good rest of the year, not to mention a good game against the hapless Tigers. Look for Hess to cross the line late in the game.

BJ Leilua (risk and reward)

It looks like Leilua is starting to find his grove again. Against a makeshift left edge on Copley and Vidot, Leilua would be liking his lips as well as Rapana. It could be a very long day for Copley against the big centre from the Raiders. Look for at least a try and try assist from Leilua.

Who are you picking as captain for Round 6?
