Hasta la vista, baby

This article goes out to Fletcher Terrence who has been keeping us informed of his team progress throughout the year on NRL HQ Facebook group.

We are up to Round 9 and coach Fletcher has already managed to utilise all his terminations! Whilst many of us may have shown slightly more restraint I know my remaining terminations are significant lower than what they have been in the past at the end of Round 9.

Other bloggers such as Adam from Captain’s Call has also highlighted the number of significant injuries that have occurred to top 17 squad members and Round 9 was no different with many more going down. For those of us who follow the NRL Physio I think it is only a matter of time until he posts his own RSI injury news!

As I like to think of myself as a stats guy I thought I would try and quantify the impact that these injuries and the revolving door coaching methods (I’m looking at you Paul Green!) are having on our ability to recruit players who are staying in the team. I know in my Supporters League teams it is proving an absolute nightmare.

The below table shows the number of players who laced up the boots up to the completion of Round 9 in 2018 compared to 2019 by club. The overall numbers have not been significantly different however I believe we are seeing the rotation through the starting 13 whereas in previous years a lot of this player movement was present in bench rotations which are less CEO relevant.

For me this raises two important questions:

  1. How can NQL have tapped 24 players on the shoulder this year and GGM is not one of them?
  2. 27 players! – Whats doing Kearney?

As always good luck, enjoy your football and car’n you mighty Illawarra Steelers!
